The Sign and the Presence
An artistic journey through memory, language and participation.
Sergio Brambillasca is an Italian contemporary artist whose practice explores the human condition through the mark, memory, and individual and collective responsibility. His work moves across painting, symbolism and narrative, questioning the relationship between the individual and the surrounding world.
The human profile is a central element of his visual language: not the depiction of a face, but the trace of a presence. The perimeter defines the space of the work—an “invisible theatre” in which the inner rooms take shape, symbolic places inhabited by memory and experience.
Participation is integral to this research. The viewer is more than a spectator: their presence, gestures and thoughts can enter the work and help shape its meaning. This understanding of art extends beyond the painted surface and beyond the exhibition space.
Throughout his career, Brambillasca has developed exhibitions and projects in dialogue with institutions, schools and cultural organisations. Memory, human dignity and violence recur in an artistic practice that brings individual expression into conversation with civic responsibility.
RECOGNITION / 2022
Premio Mede@
In 2022, Sergio Brambillasca received the Premio Mede@ in recognition of his commitment to combating violence. The award acknowledges an aspect of his practice that goes beyond representation and seeks a direct dialogue with society and with people.
The inscription on the plaque reads: “For your continued efforts in the fight against gender-based violence and violence in general.” (Translation from the original Italian.)
The award forms part of Brambillasca’s civic and artistic journey, which includes Sui passi della violenza (In the Footsteps of Violence), an exhibition project comprising fourteen works and conceived as an opportunity to reflect on violence and personal responsibility.
